On February 27, 1968, CDR Paul Milius was piloting an OP-2E observation aircraft on a mission over Southeast Asia. The aircraft took several hits from anti-aircraft artillery, killing one crewmember and severely damaging the plane. CDR Milius remained at the controls and ensured steady flight which enabled the other seven crewmembers to successfully bail out. All seven were eventually rescued, but CDR Milius’ was never located. For his selfless actions, Paul Milius was awarded the Navy Cross, and USS MILIUS (DDG 69) is named in his honor.
Hoist your mug to a true hero.
