In 1981 I was a BM1 on the USS Turner Joy DD951. We stopped in Pearl Harbor Hawaii on the way to West Pac. So while we were inport I decided to clean and touch up the sides using a paint float. So on Saturday morning I put some Seaman on the paint float and pulled it up under the numbers on the port bow. After about 10 minutes the seaman kept telling me to come down on the paint float. I kept yelling at them to shut up and get to work. After about an hour of them bothering me to come down on the paint float I did. Under the numbers 951 was a big pineapple and a rainbow painted directly below the numbers. I had a good friend who was the BM1 on the USS Bagley FF1069 so I knew he did it so I decided to put our paint punt in the water at 0400 the morning we were getting underway. I had a couple of seaman paint over the 1065 bow number on the port side with haze gray to completely erase their bow number. About 2 days later my CO got a message from Bagley’s CO wanting me to go to NJP for what we did. I told our CO what they did to us so of course nothing happed other than a butt chewing.
