Black Shoes – the Navy’s colloquial term for Surface Warfare Officers (SWO), and often extended to refer to all Sailors who serve aboard surface ships. Black Shoes have a breadth and depth of knowledge that extends across all facets of ship operations.

The gold SWO pin, which signifies an Officer’s first significant qualification at sea, was first authorized in 1975. Three years later, the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist (ESWS) program was established, and with it the silver ESWS pin.

These important career milestones require experience, perseverance, and a significant amount of time dedicated to the study of the seagoing profession.
