I was standing communications watch at the Coast Guard Academy, New London, CT, one night in the early ‘60s. After I got in bed one night, the phone rang. It was an Academy neighbor. Said he thought he heard someone yelling for help out on the Thames River. I called the waterfront to make them aware. They went out and found a guy hanging onto a buoy; brought him ashore. Next morning, the phone rang again. Newspaper. Wanted to know what happened, and who did the rescue. I told them the truth: there were two Bosuns Mates on duty at the dock that night, John Paul Jones and Robert Lewis Stevenson. There was silence at the other end of the line. When the story came out in the paper, no mention was made of the rescuers names. Oh, WELL! We do our jobs and don’t look back.
