While there is the right amount of coffee to get one going there is also the right amount to make one seasick. This young sailor was onboard the USS THACH, a mighty battle frigate, tracking from San Diego (circa 2005) to Victoria B.C. Seas were high and while a young sailor’s stomach is capable of handling almost all consumables this one was unable to tolerate the combination of multiple glasses of coffee and the rocking of a battleship in an extreme sea state. The “balls to 4” watch (0000-0400) was manned with the the top pipehitters (that sailor) and while the Skipper of the ship was sleeping soundly we ordered all hands to take their racks and “secure for sea”. With unquestionable bravery the sailor in question chugged yet another glass of coffee and soon met the undeniable moment of absolute sickness that sent everything from his insides to a place we shall not speak of.
