While stationed in NSGD Rota after standing the midwatch I was supposed to take my advancement exam in the morning, without time to get chow, so I grabbed a large cup of coffee from our coffee mess and loaded as much sugar in it as I could. You know, the old fashioned glass jar with the chrome top and sugar caked around the little flap. After grabbing my heavily sugar laden cup of joe and running to the examination station, got there just in time, and no sooner had the tests been distributed, I was able to take my first swig of coffee... only to find out that my buddies had emptied the sugar jar and replaced it with salt. I could not leave the exam once it was started, and could not replace the coffee... so I ended up drinking it anyway, finished my exam as quickly as I could. I ended up getting an excellent score on the exam and got promoted to CTI2 a few months later. I also started drinking my coffee black from then on... That was in 1978.
